    Splash

Since there is absolutely nothing going on here right now I decided to do a post about my cat/kid Splash. Some of you may remember that he was very very sick a couple of years ago.

I felt so bad when he got sick because he was at death's door before we even realized anything was wrong. He's always been very neurotic, spending 90% of his time in the basement, and having very little contact with us. He was feral when we got him at 4 months old and just never got over it.

During his recovery we had to keep him locked in an empty bedroom so that I could catch him twice a day to give him his meds. He spent the next 2 weeks in there, screeching and howling to get out and scrambling up the curtains every time I had to give him his antibiotics. After he was done with the meds, we let him out of the bedroom and honestly I figured the damage was done. He was almost 9 years old at the time and I was sure what little trust he'd given us over the years was gone.

Once out of the bedroom, my fears were confirmed. He spent the next several weeks hiding under the basement stairs, hissing and growling every time any of us came near him. He was like a wild beast.

He's now 11 and an amazing transformation has occurred over the past couple of years. Slowly he began to emerge from the basement, spending time sitting in the dining room windows sunning himself. He'd still bolt if we got too close but it was progress. Then he began to spend time behind Scott's recliner in the living room. That scared me at first because that's where I found him when he was so sick, but I'd check on him there and he didn't protest, and he was fine.

Now you never know exactly where you'll find him. Some of his favorite hangouts are still the dining room windows, but now you can go up and pet him and he merely purrs (just don't pick him up, that requires major reconstructive surgery!. Some toher favorite hangouts include David's bed during the day, the arms of the sofa, the back of Scott's recliner, Scott's LAP when he's home and snuggling next to me when I lay down on the the couch after David leaves for school.

He still runs like the hounds of hell are after him if a stranger is here (or Sabrina!)but at last he's become a part of the family.
